Hospitality and Tourism

The glitz and glamour of travel might not seem so intoxicating once you have seen it form the other side. There is just no way around it, the hospitality and tourism industry means good old-fashioned hard work.

You have simply not lived until you’ve carried six heavy bag up three flights of stairs for an elderly couple that refuses to tip, or been screamed at in a foreign language for reasons that you never understand. Ah, this is often the life of those who work in the hospitality and tourism industry.

Under the umbrella of the hospitality and tourism banner resides a vast number of people whose career function is to make sure that you have a pleasant stay in a hotel when you are on a vacation or a business trip. This industry encompasses all the people of the industry that are needed to keep the vast tourism machine we all know and love up and running.

When one ponders the number of individuals and the diversity who have careers in this industry, it can be a bit staggering.  A trip may begin with a travel agent, but it certainly does not end there. You can expect to run across waiters and waitresses, lodging managers, housekeepers, hotel, motel and resort desk clerks and a host of others. Of course, this does not even touch on the vast army working diligently behind the scenes to make it all happen, such as food preparation workers, short order cooks and janitors to name a few. It takes a lot of people working very hard so that you can party! This army of workers is the heart and soul of the hospitality and tourism industry, and it could simply not function without them.

This field has many careers that are low paying with minimal room for advancement. Yet, there are bright spots as well. Part of the trick for those interested in the hospitality and tourism industry is to do some homework and see what looks like a good fit. Click on any of the links above to begin your quest!
